12 Unexpected Resolutions for the New Year

I was going to avoid making any specific resolutions this year.  I was just going to focus on some personal goals toward wellness and leave it at that.  I figured that I would not set myself up for the negative connotations associated with resolutions.  Then things started coming up, and I kept thinking, “Yeah, that would make for a good resolution.”  I started seeing and understanding how setting and reaching specific goals, all inspired by the coming of a new year, could be beneficial to my wellness vision.  So, here I am sharing with you my 12 unexpected resolutions for 2013:

12.  Declutter all my devices.  This means clearing out unused apps on my iPad, cleaning up the massive amount of photos and videos on my iPhone, and organizing documents and photos on my computers.  This also includes renaming and organizing files on my office computer so that everyone can find them.

11.  Use the momAgenda app to get organized.  This app is pretty amazing and I have only been utilizing it off and on.  I would love to make it a weekly ritual to keep it updated.  It just may help me to manage my time even more effectively.  I am also really interested in taking advantage of their free printables to make a household organizational binder.

10.  Plan weekly menus without stress.  In the past I have been too much of a perfectionist and organizing junkie to handle menu planning without stress.  I started using the Pepperplate app in hopes that it would help.  While it is a great organizing app it only adds to my stress.  For me, it is like buying peanut butter.  I have too many options!  Between Pinterest, cookbooks, Ziplist, and other recipe providers I am overwhelmed and find it difficult to input anything because it has to be “just right.”  That makes me put it off.  It is an OCD symptom that I must overcome–this year!  I am determined to shed myself of the undue stress related to menu planning (and any other kind of planning for that matter) by trying not to overthink things like I have for years.

9.  Find someone to do a blog makeover.  I have been dying to set up a more personalized blog theme since I started blogging.  I just have not been able to afford it.  I figured that until I started making money blogging I would not even consider it.  Now I find myself growing bored of “my look,” and slightly envious of all the other cute mommy blogs out there.  My goal is to keep searching until I find the right concept and the right person to pull it off that won’t charge an arm and leg.

8.  Stop biting my fingernails.  Yes, I realize it is gross.  Nevertheless, it is a habit I have battled my entire life.  I stop for a year to only encounter a stressful event that turns me right back to it.  This past year it was the birth of my son.  I started almost immediately after he was born.  I can’t really explain it.  I just know I’d like to be in a position where painting my nails would be worth it.  *Side note:  More manicures and pedicures in 2013!

7.  Celebrate birthdays and anniversaries of friends and family with cards and/or gifts.  I want to be that Aunt that remembers to get packages in the mail in time for them to arrive on birthdays.  I want to be that friend that remembers to get a birthday or anniversary card in the mail before the event actually happens.  I don’t just want to be the person who sends a text on that day and that is the end of it.  I have already missed a few events this year, and I must do better!

6.  Have meals at the table more often.  For some reason we have fallen out of the habit of having every meal at the table.  Part of it is because we wake up at different times.  The other is because I just can’t sit at a table for lunch when I only have Corban for company.  I want to do better though, because that is an important tradition that I am not willing to sacrifice.

5.  Practice a more strict beauty regimen.  I haven’t bought new makeup in a year.  I am very much looking forward to trying out new “good-for-me” brands, and even making some of my own!  I am also looking forward to feeling better about myself.  We probably can all agree that when you look better, you feel better.  No more yoga pants all day long and no more excuses!

4.  Eat out less.  Somewhere around September I simply stopped cooking at like I had been and we started eating out more.  We were either going out, bringing it home, or having it brought to us.  That is no way to be living, especially when we try to advocate naked foods as much as we can.  I just fell into a slump.  I can blame it on the 1st trimester, right?  This year I will get back to the kitchen!

3.  Monetize my blog.  I am still learning about blogging and adjusting to life in the blogosphere.  My goal is to keep educating myself on how things work in an attempt to have it actually start making money one day.  I know I need to start getting out into the blogosphere more so that I can start making more pitches to companies.  I would love to find myself in a position where they are asking me to review their products.  Not only is there a slight thrill in opening up a package, I enjoy writing and spreading the word about small businesses, especially WAHMs.  While it may seem like a small thing, supporting small businesses it actually the one thing that is going to help get this country back on track.

2.  Pay down bills.  It would not be realistic to say, “Pay everything off.”  It just will not happen in a year.  What I can do for my family is start paying things down and saving more.

1.  Lose the baby weight.  As soon as I can after Baby White #2 makes his or her debut I plan to get started on losing the baby weight instead of sitting around feeling sorry for myself like I did the first round.  I had never been “heavy” before so I think a lot of my lack of enthusiasm to get started was due to shock.  I did not not even know where to begin.  This time I hope it will be different.  I know what foods to eat and that I have to get moving as soon as possible!

What are some of your resolutions for 2013?  Any one thing you are focused on for the new year?  What have you done to get started reaching your goals?
